This brief piece for piano was written in September 1909 as part of an Hommage à Joseph Haydn, commissioned by Jules Écorcheville for the Revue musicale de la S.I.M. (no.1, 15 Jan. 1910). Other participants were Debussy, Dukas, Hahn, d'Indy, and Widor. The piece was first performed by Ennemond Trillat on 11 March 1911.
The letters of Haydn's name are converted to the theme B-A-D-D-G.
