Florent Schmitt   (1870 - 1958)

The composer Florent Schmitt was a fellow student with Ravel in Fauré's composition class, and they remained friends for life. Schmitt shared with Ravel the experience of several attempts to win the Prix de Rome, but he was eventually successful, in 1900. He went on to write for the ballet, the stage and for film, as well as producing a wide range of instrumental and chamber works.

Ravel dedicated to him his setting of Placet futile in Trois poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé.
