1896 – 1899: Paris, 15 rue Lagrange

From the rue Pigalle, the Ravels made their sole domestic venture south of the river to an apartment in rue Lagrange in the 5th arrondissement, not far from the university area of the Sorbonne.

During these years, Ravel was attending classes with his teachers Gédalge and, at the Conservatoire, Fauré. His output of compositions was increasing, and some of his works were receiving their first performances.

Among the works he composed at this time were:

• Sainte
• Chanson du rouet
• Si morne!
• Shéhérazade (ouverture de féerie)
• Pavane pour une infante défunte

and also the Sonata pour violon et piano, which was never published in his lifetime and which he seems to have rejected.

In 1899 the family returned to Montmartre, to an apartment in rue Fromentin.
